Everything in San Diego, California related to steampunk culture. Steampunk began as contemporary science fiction invoking the feel and imagery of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne. It has recently exploded into an artistic movement bringing together alternative technology tinkerers, costumers, artists, musicians, computer modifiers, goths, punks, geeks and freaks. Steampunk is brass, clockwork and wood, top hats, corsets and goggles. It is a past that never was but should have been. It is a mash-up of the contemporary and the Victorian, and a rebellion against plastic boxes and disposable culture.
Chrononaut is the only club night in San Diego, and one of the few anywhere, put on by steampunks for steampunks. Professor Greyshade spins the best in anachronistic alternative music, with live acts and other diversions. Zirk Ubu is a unique circus troupe with a post modern neo-Victorian aesthetic. Recently they started calling themselves "steampunk. " We've been calling them that since we first saw them. Steampowered Giraffe, are San Diego's most beloved steampunk musical act. Their talent and originality is gaining them recognition beyond our City as well. Trained as mimes, they portray steampowered musical automotons with comedic excellence and pop cabaret brilliance. The Tragic Tantrum is San Diego's only dark cabaret band. It is possible that there are steampunks who don't like dark cabaret music, but we don't know any. The Revolution of Steam For those who prefer steampunk recreation of the live action participation varity, Revolution of Steam offers live action roleplaying. The Gaslight Gathering is San Diego's, and indeed Southern California's, first Steampunk and Victorian convention. It is the result of alliance between the people who organize Condor and our extraordinarily strong local steampunk community.

The Southern California Steampunk Yahoo group (socalsteam) is the place on the web to learn about steampunk happenings in San Diego and beyond. The San Diego Costume Guild has several members into steampunk and are some of the most knowledgeable people in town regarding actual Victorian clothing. Jerry Abuan Photography, Jerry has taken more and better photos of steampunk events in San Diego than anyone. Winona Cookie is well known on Etsy for her steampunk collage art and is also known locally for her impeccable steampunk attire. The House of Hutsell, is family of artists, costumers, prop-makers, and authors, who's creative energy is increasing focused on steampunk. Kim Hutsell, aka Lithobius Quick, also conducts workshops on steampunk maker techniques which are announced on socalsteam.
The Device Gallery features art that contemplates the machine and our relationship with it. A great deal of what they show can be described as either steampunk or dieselpunk. Racine and Laramie is San Diego's first and best pipe and cigar store, as well as being one of the most authentically nineteenth century shopping experiences in Old Town. The smoking lounge is popular with steampunks and other anachronists. Ritual is a small North Park bistro with a fantastic beer selection, great food and service. The décor is like an anachronistic Central European hunting lodge with gothic overtones. It is also very close to Queen Bee's, which is alcohol-free. So if you want to start your evening of steampunk entertainment with a couple beers, or a bite to eat, this is the place to do it. Queen Bee's is San Diego's best loved all ages venue. They are very open to innovative, creative musical events. Queen Bee's is home to Chrononaut, many Steampowered Giraffe shows, and other steampunk related events. It has a comfortable living room/art gallery ambience that is instantly relaxing even if you didn't get a chance to stop by Ritual. The Greyshade Estate, is the most ambitious steampunk inspired project in San Diego. Starting with a trashed house in East San Diego, one family is building a fusion of a nineteenth century homestead and an twenty-first century appropiate technology home with steampunk flair.
